We recently upgraded our Nespresso Original Line machine to the Vertuo Line system and now we’re just wondering why we didn’t do it sooner. I thought I’d write this post for those of you who are stuck on the fence about whether or not you should hop on over to the Vertuo Line side of things.
More variety, more customisation
There are a wider variety of capsule sizes, but you can program each cup size to suit your preferences. All of the flavoured capsules [as well as the seasonal releases] automatically extract at the Nespresso mug size of 230mL, but that’s just way too much for our preferences, so we reprogrammed the machine to only release 150mL for these mug-sized capsules. Not only does this amount of coffee suit our mugs perfectly, it also tastes stronger and pairs better with our preferred amount of milk.
A better looking coffee
There’s way more crema, which doesn’t really mean anything other than this: your morning latte will look way more impressive than before. I’m so influenced by the look and feel of things, so this is a major plus for me.
You’ll probably save money
Yep, you read that right. Most of the Original Line capsules only extract at the espresso size of 40mL, and while you can push a lungo [110mL] out of almost all of them, you can definitely taste that they have been over-extracted when doing this, and the coffee comes out watery and weak. We like a big coffee, so our solution to this was to use two capsules per cup, but that starts adding up when you’re both having at least two coffees a day. By upgrading to the Vertuo system, we’ve been able to save money on each cup of coffee by using the double espresso capsules, which come in at under one dollar each. Before, we were spending around $1.60 per cup, and now we’re only spending 0.95c per cup. Sixty five cents doesn’t sound like a whole lot in the short term, but by doing the math you’ll be able to see that in a one month period we’re able to save $80, simply by using the Vertuo Line machine and capsules. The machine well and truly pays for itself in just a couple of months alone.
Access to seasonal releases
While Nespresso does offer seasonal releases for the Original Line machines, they are definitely much more limited. For Halloween this year, Vertuo Line customers had access to a pumpkin spiced capsule [which, by the way, was insanely good], whereas Original Line customers did not. For Christmas, Original Line customers get access to three seasonal capsules, which is great, but Vertuo Line customers get access to five! The additional Gingerbread and Peppermint flavours have me so excited for Christmas this year, and I know if I was still using the Original Line machine that I’d be really disappointed on missing out on these flavours in particular.
A more sustainable choice
Over the past couple of years, Nespresso has been putting more time and resources into their sustainability practices, and that can especially be seen within the Vertuo Line. Because the system is newer and constantly being adapted to suit the needs of modern consumers, Vertuo Line customers will note that many of the capsules they purchase through Nespresso today are being made with 80% recycled aluminium, a by-product of the Nespresso industry itself. Another major breakthrough Nespresso has made in the past couple of years is to start designing and building machines out of recycled products. The Vertuo Next machine — Nespresso’s latest model — is constructed with 54% recycled materials. It’s certainly not a perfect system in terms of sustainability, but it’s a start and a really, really great start at that.
All in all, if you’re happy with your morning espresso and aren’t looking for that to change — you should stick with your Original Line machine. But if you’re wanting access to double espresso capsules as well as even larger capsules like mug and gran lungo, or if you’re looking to make your coffee routine a little more festive each holiday season and were hoping to save a little bit of money on your Nespresso habit, then you should absolutely consider upgrading to the Vertuo Line system. We’re so happy that we made the switch and truly just wish we would have done it sooner.6
